About the battery (most important)
- What’s the battery’s state of health? This is the number that matters most — the pack’s real remaining capacity. A vague answer is a reason to test it yourself.
- How was it usually charged? Mostly home/Level 2 charging is gentler than heavy daily DC fast-charging.
- How much battery and drivetrain warranty is left — and does it transfer to me? This is a real safety net; confirm the years and miles remaining.
About history and condition
- Has it been in any accidents or had bodywork? On an EV, collision history can affect the battery and structure, not just the panels.
- Are there service and repair records? A documented history is worth paying for.
- Any open recalls or outstanding software updates? Quick to check, easy to overlook.
About charging and equipment
- What charging equipment comes with it? Mobile connector, adapters, and any home charger add real value.
- What’s the real-world range now versus when new? Compare their answer to the model’s original rating.
- What’s the max charging speed and connector type? Connector standards are shifting (NACS vs. CCS), which affects where and how fast you can charge.
About ownership and features
- Which features or subscriptions transfer to me? Some don’t — notably Tesla’s Full Self-Driving. Confirm before agreeing on price.
- How many previous owners, and what’s the title status? Clean title, known history.
- Why are you selling? The answer often tells you more than the spec sheet.
The one question that matters most
If you only verify one thing, make it battery state of health — it drives range, reliability, and resale. See How Battery Health Affects Used EV Value.
Bring a specialist before you sign
The surest way to answer all of these with confidence is an independent pre-purchase inspection by people who only work on EVs — including a battery test. We’ll do it, even on a car you found elsewhere. Book a pre-purchase inspection.
Quick answers
What’s the most important question to ask?
Battery state of health — it’s the single biggest factor in an EV’s value and reliability.
Should I get a used EV inspected before buying?
Yes — an independent EV inspection, including a battery test, is the cheapest insurance you can buy before purchase.
Do features transfer when I buy a used EV?
Some do, some don’t — Tesla’s FSD famously doesn’t. Always confirm before agreeing on price.
